A VERY COMPLIANT CHRISTMAS (EP) (2025)

A Very Compliant Christmas

Snowflakes & Surveillance

These Festive Things

Wrapping Paper & Red Tape
Christmas, once a season of small rituals and shared warmth, now arrives wrapped in notifications, nudges, and perfectly timed suggestions. The lights still glow, the songs still play, but something hums quietly beneath it all - a system watching, guiding, optimising.
A Very Compliant Christmas is The Zunts' seasonal offering: four songs that sit comfortably beside the fire while quietly questioning who stacked the logs, approved the heat output, and monetised the glow. It's festive, familiar, and deliberately unsettling.
From snowdrops blooming under surveillance to the quiet comfort of the festive things we once took for granted, the EP moves between warmth and unease with a knowing smile. Algorithms replace instinct, tradition collides with process, and even joy arrives pre-approved. Wrapping paper tangles with red tape. Nostalgia meets compliance.
As with all Zunts releases, there's humour here - sharp, dark, and observant - but also genuine affection for the human moments that persist despite everything. Shared drinks, cold mornings, old places, and the stubborn belief that meaning still lives in small, unmeasured things.
This is not an anti-Christmas record. It's a reminder of what Christmas was, what it's becoming, and what might still be salvaged if we look up from the screen, ignore the prompts, and remember why the season mattered in the first place.
Festive. Familiar. Filtered.
Welcome to A Very Compliant Christmas.
PRESS RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION
THE ZUNTS ANNOUNCE "A VERY COMPLIANT CHRISTMAS EP"
The festive holidays, now with added oversight.
LONDON, UK - The Zunts return with A Very Compliant Christmas, a four-track seasonal EP that wraps familiar festive warmth around a darker, more unsettling modern reality.
Blending nostalgia, satire, and observation, the record explores how Christmas now arrives filtered through algorithms, compliance frameworks, and carefully optimised cheer. The lights still twinkle, the carols still play, but beneath the surface sits a quiet tension between tradition and control.
Across the EP, The Zunts contrast the enduring comfort of shared rituals - winter walks, pub nights, family tables - with a world where joy is nudged, tracked, and monetised. Festive simplicity coexists with surveillance, consumer addiction, and bureaucratic absurdity, all delivered with the band's trademark dark humour and melodic bite.
Musically, the EP stays true to The Zunts' distinctive blend of rock, rap-inflected delivery, and spoken-word storytelling. It's warm without being sentimental, critical without losing affection for the human moments that still cut through the noise.
A Very Compliant Christmas is not a protest record, nor a novelty release. It's a seasonal snapshot of the times we're living in - where even celebration feels supervised, and compliance is dressed up as comfort.

TOM HARGREAVES CHATS TO FELIX DUNLOP

Show: Woodsmoke & Whisky, presented by Tom Hargreaves
Guest: Felix Dunlop
First aired: 11:30pm, Friday 19th December 2025
Segment: On A Very Compliant Christmas
Transcript:
Tom: And finally, Felix — we can’t possibly finish the evening without talking about the new Zunts Christmas EP, A Very Compliant Christmas, which dropped just this morning. Have you had a chance to listen to it yet?
Felix: Of course. First thing on the turntable, actually. I love the opening couple of tracks — proper angsty Zunts fare, sharp, sarcastic, and unsettling in all the right ways. The third song’s a lovely reworking of their 1986 classic The Simple Things — very warm, very human. But the final track... Well, what did you make of it, Tom?
Tom: So, I have to say, the EP’s final track — Wrapping Paper & Red Tape — left me scratching my head. Cheerful music-hall? Vaudeville? On a Zunts record? I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to be laughing, cringing, or doing a bit of both.
Felix: (chuckling, swirling his glass) I know exactly what you mean Tom, but that’s why it works. That jaunty, almost BBC Christmas special vibe… and then the lyrics hit — a bureaucratic nightmare dressed as cheer. Classic Zunts mischief.
Tom: I see your point Felix, I really do. It’s certainly memorable. But for a moment, I felt like I’d wandered into a 1970s children’s TV Christmas special without a warning sign.
Felix: Which puts it in very familiar territory for them, really. It reminds me of the closer on Trojan Horses — The Great Vaccine Roundup of ’21. Nobody saw that coming either. A full-blown country and western pastiche at the end of such a dark record.
Tom: Ah yes, Vaccine Roundup, as everyone calls it now. Didn’t the band describe that style as… what was it?
Felix: (laughing) “Zuntry ’n’ Western,” if I remember rightly.
Tom: (laughing) That’s the one. And you’re right — same trick here. A total stylistic curveball, but it somehow sums everything up better than another angry song ever could.
Felix: Exactly. The surprise disarms you. You lower your guard because the music feels friendly, nostalgic — and then you realise the message hasn’t softened at all. If anything, it cuts deeper. And that’s exactly why it works! The contrast makes you pay attention. Subversive without shouting — and it sticks in your head. I laughed out loud at the anti-social behaviour line.
Tom: (grinning) True, that got me. The gingerbread-people joke too. I suppose my hesitation is just… it’s different from the rest of the EP. Cheeky, almost absurd.
Felix: Absolutely — and deliberately so. It’s oddball, unexpected, and still unmistakably Zunts. Just like Vaccine Roundup, it reframes the whole record on the way out.
Tom: (nodding) Fair enough. I may have been cautious at first... I still am... but I can’t deny it leaves an impression. Agree to disagree?
Felix: Agreed. And at the end of the day, I think we’re both big fans of the Zunts’ subversive genius — even when they sneak in a music-hall curveball.
Tom: (laughing) Indeed. Long may they continue to confound us.
